Description

Directions: 1. Pour just enough rubbing alcohol in the bottom of the bowl to cover the bottom of the white basket. 2. Choose a frame of capped brood and confirm that the queen is not on that frame. 3. Collect a sample of bees using the sample basket while inside of the cup. 4. Once the appropriate amount of bees has been collected, fill the cup with alcohol to the fill line. 5. Place the lid on the cup and twist it close. Shake the cup for 60 seconds. 6. Let the enclosed sample rest for 3-5 minutes. Then, shake the sample again for another 60 seconds. Let the sample rest for a minute to allow the mites to detach and drop to the bottom.

Remove the basket of bees and count the number of mites by looking through the bottom of the cup.

*Recommended Sampling: about 300 bees. (top level indicated on the basket.)

*Calculating Percentage: % infestation = # mites ÷ # bees x 100
